ELDs (Electronic Logging Devices) for owner-operators & small fleets

Every carrier that needs logs has to run a device from the FMCSA registered list. The list is self-certified, so being on it means the maker says the device meets the rule, not that FMCSA has tested or endorses it. For a one-truck operation the biggest differences are hardware cost, whether you are locked into a contract, and how easy roadside inspection transfers are.

Listed in no particular ranking order. Prices were checked on vendor sites on October 30, 2026 and can change at any time. “Contact for pricing” means the vendor does not show a price publicly and quotes on request. Every ELD here appears on the FMCSA registered ELD list as of that date. Registration is self-certified and is not an FMCSA endorsement.

What to check before you choose

  • Confirm the exact device and model is still on the FMCSA registered list (fmcsa.dot.gov) before you buy, and again before inspections. Revoked devices have to be replaced.
  • Ask whether the price is per vehicle or per driver, and whether hardware is bought, leased, or bundled into a contract.
  • Check the contract length and the early-termination terms. Many fleet plans run 3 years.
  • Make sure it supports the roadside data-transfer method you expect to use (telematic web service and email, or local USB and Bluetooth).
  • If you want dashcams, IFTA mileage or GPS tracking, price them as add-ons up front.
