What “free” costs you
- No broker credit data. Paid boards show days-to-pay and credit scores. On a free board, you check yourself.
- Less rate visibility. Without lane rate history, it’s harder to know if an offer is low. Comparing several free sources helps.
- Fewer alerts and book-now loads. You’ll spend more time refreshing.
Three-step broker check (free)
- Search the broker’s MC or USDOT number on FMCSA’s Licensing & Insurance site. Confirm active broker authority and a bond or trust on file.
- Make sure the phone number and email on the rate confirmation match the broker’s official contact details, since double-brokering scams often spoof them.
- Run the broker through your factoring company’s credit check before you accept.

Frequently asked questions
Are there any truly free load boards?
Yes. Direct Freight offers free load search, FreightFinder runs a free load board, and DOFT has a free Basic plan (Premium is $19.99/month). Broker and shipper apps such as Uber Freight, Amazon Relay and J.B. Hunt 360 let approved carriers book loads without a load board subscription.
What do free load boards leave out?
Usually some combination of load volume, broker credit and days-to-pay data, rate history, alerts and book-now loads. Paid boards like DAT and Truckstop put broker data and rate tools in their paid tiers.
Are free load boards good for box trucks, hotshots and cargo vans?
They can be, since many small-equipment loads are posted on free boards and apps. Filter by your equipment type, and be extra careful with broker vetting because free boards usually don’t include credit data.
How do I check if a broker is legit for free?
Look up the broker’s USDOT/MC on FMCSA’s public records to confirm active broker authority and a bond or trust on file, and ask your factoring company to run a credit check. Most factors do this for free for their clients.
