IFTA fuel tax calculator

Estimate your quarterly IFTA return by state: miles, fuel bought and tax owed or credited, prefilled with the official IFTA, Inc. 4Q 2026 diesel rates.

Rates are diesel rates from the IFTA, Inc. 4Q 2026 tax rate matrix (US $ per US gallon, updated Oct 27, 2026, checked Oct 31, 2026). IFTA, Inc. says this matrix is not final until December 4, 2026. Every rate is editable. Check the official table before you file. See the full 4Q 2026 rate table (CSV download).

How to use it

  1. Add a row for each state or province you drove in this quarter (three rows with example numbers are filled in to start).
  2. Enter the miles you drove there and the gallons of tax-paid diesel you bought there. Use 0 if you bought none.
  3. The rate fills in from the 4Q 2026 matrix. Change it if your base state publishes a different figure.
  4. The total shows what you would owe (positive) or get credited (negative) across all jurisdictions.

The matrix shows no diesel rate for Oregon, so it is set to $0 here. Alberta’s diesel rate is $0.00 this quarter under its fuel tax relief, per the matrix footnote.

Frequently asked questions

How is IFTA fuel tax calculated?
Divide your total miles (all jurisdictions) by total gallons to get fleet MPG. For each state or province, taxable gallons = miles driven there ÷ MPG. Subtract the tax-paid gallons you bought there to get net taxable gallons, then multiply by that jurisdiction’s rate. Positive means you owe; negative is a credit. Surcharges (Kentucky and Virginia this quarter) apply to all taxable gallons with no credit for fuel bought.
Where do the tax rates come from?
They are the diesel (“Special Diesel”) rates from the official IFTA, Inc. 4Q 2026 tax rate matrix, in US dollars per US gallon, as published on the matrix updated October 27, 2026. IFTA, Inc. says the matrix is not final until December 4, 2026, so check it before you file. You can edit any rate in the calculator.
Why does Ohio appear twice?
The 4Q 2026 matrix lists a separate Ohio diesel rate from October 4, 2026 (a rate reduction holiday shown through January 2, 2027). Split your Ohio miles and gallons between the two rows to match the dates you ran.
Does this file my IFTA return?
No. It is an estimate for planning. File with your base jurisdiction using its forms and the final matrix, and keep your trip records and fuel receipts.
Can my ELD do this for me?
Many ELDs and TMS tools track miles by state for IFTA. See the IFTA column on our ELD comparison.
