Short answer

  • No credit check, no fees: Mudflap app (pay with your own card) or TCS Fuel Card (cash-secured, $0 monthly fees).
  • Mastercard acceptance plus controls: AtoB. Flex costs $15/month for 1-5 cards plus a $35 setup fee.
  • Mixed gas and diesel fleets: Coast, $4 per active user per month.
  • Already factoring? Check your factor’s card first. Many bundle fuel credit.

How to pick

  1. Map your lanes. A big discount is worthless if the in-network stops aren’t where you fuel. Every vendor here has a station map.
  2. Decide credit vs prepaid. Prepaid or app-based options approve fast with no credit check. A credit card frees up cash and can build business credit (AtoB reports to Experian).
  3. Count the fees. A $15/month card needs to save you more than $15 a month. At 1,500 gallons a month, a 5¢ difference in discount is $75.
  4. Check your factor. Factoring companies like CFX Solutions (up to 80¢/gal off at 5,000+ locations, $1,500 credit line per truck) and Apex Capital bundle fuel programs.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best fuel card for a new owner-operator?
If you have no business credit yet, look at options without a credit check: the Mudflap app (no application, no credit check, use your own debit or credit card), TCS (a cash-secured card with $0 activation, monthly or annual fees), or AtoB’s prepaid Unlimited card (no bank information needed to approve). Many factoring companies also bundle a fuel card.
Do fuel cards require a credit check?
Credit cards do; prepaid and app-based options often don’t. Mudflap says its app needs no application or credit check. TCS is cash-secured. Coast says applying won’t affect your credit score. AtoB asks for your SSN, EIN, driver’s license and three months of revenue proof.
How do diesel discounts work on fuel cards?
Common structures are retail-minus (a set discount off the pump price at in-network stops), cost-plus (the station’s cost plus a small margin, often bigger savings), and cents-per-gallon rebates on your statement. The advertised “average” and “up to” numbers depend on where you fuel, so compare the in-network stops on your regular lanes.
Can a fuel card help with IFTA?
Yes. Cards that provide itemized, per-transaction fuel data (gallons, location, state) make quarterly IFTA reporting easier. TCS and AtoB both mention IFTA-ready statements or support.
Do I need factoring to get a fuel card?
No, but many factoring companies offer fuel cards or credit lines to clients, for example CFX Solutions’ $1,500 per-truck fuel credit line and Apex Capital’s free fuel card. That can be the easiest way for a new authority to get fuel credit.
